ATM Tip: Always Choose Local Currency
At a foreign ATM, withdraw in the local currency and decline the ATM’s currency conversion.
If the ATM asks whether you want to be charged in U.S. dollars or the local currency, choose the local currency.
The ATM may offer to convert the withdrawal into dollars for you. Decline it. The exchange rate offered by the ATM can include an additional markup.
Bottom line: Choose local currency and let your bank/card network handle the conversion.
Paying by Card Overseas
When using a credit or debit card overseas, always choose the local currency—not U.S. dollars.
If a restaurant, store, or card terminal offers to charge you in U.S. dollars, decline it. Choosing U.S. dollars lets the merchant or its payment processor set the exchange rate, which can include a significant markup.
Choose the local currency and let your bank/card network handle the conversion.
